Visual Puns

Class assignment 1 (pair work, done orally):

Read the following definitions of visual pun and say which of them better fits the pictures below or, maybe, one of them.

1. A pun is a play on words which have a similar sound but different meanings.

2. Visual pun is when a phrase which is usually used as a metaphor is instead done, and shown as being performed literally.

3. Visual pun is the use of symbols to suggest two or more meanings or different associations. Visual puns combine two or more symbols (picture and/or text) to form a new meaning. The viewer must mentally elaborate on the visual stimulus to interpret the message –

Class assignment 2 (pair work, done orally):

Perform the same task for another set of pictures. Try to guess the captions of the pictures.

Class assignment 3 (group work, done orally):

Analyze the picture and the explanation of its meaning. Do you think such explanation adds something to the meaning of the picture? If yes, can you suggest a better explanation? Do you think the picture is a visual pun?
